AUGUST 2021
AMRG and POSCO are expanding cooperation and trade
POSCO to diversify scrap imports, “Russian-made first stock”
First attempt at delivery after processing (cutting) imported scrap... Industry focus on AMRG aggressiveness
POSCO expanded the supply line for imported scrap metal. After Japan and the United States, Russia was the first to import scrap metal. This contract was signed with POSCO International, which purchases POSCO's scrap metal and Asian Metal Resources Group (AMRG, Hong Kong, headquartered in Hong Kong), the largest supplier of Russian scrap.
The initial quantity of 6,000 tons has been received at Gunsan Port and is being worked on. Russian scrap metal grade 3A has a wider scope compared to other countries. Accordingly, POSCO demanded that the scrap metal be cut to within 1M and supplied. In accordance with POSCO's request, scrap metal sorting and cutting work is in progress. The scrap metal processing was handled by AMRG's Korean subsidiary (AMRG Korea). The finished scrap metal is delivered to the POSCO Gwangyang Works.
Posco imported Russian scrap for the first time. According to POSCO's request, the cutting of scrap metal within 1M is underway at Gunsan Port. It is the first time that imported scrap metal is delivered through processing after arriving in Korea. As AMRG is aggressive in supplying scrap metal to POSCO, it is highly likely to conclude a long-term contract for Russian scrap metal. This is because if POSCO expands the supply of imported scrap to Russia, it will be able to contain Japanese scrap.
Meanwhile, POSCO announced that it would increase the amount of scrap metal input to reduce carbon emissions. In the short term, we will increase the scrap iron input ratio from 15% to 20%. After 2025, the plan is to increase it to 30%. To this end, the introduction of steelmaking facilities and electric furnaces are also being considered.
